Dry, crumbly soaps

I've taken the liberty of reposting a request for help from Susan, who originally posted the following at our SBM website's Guestbook:

-Steve M.

"I too like the soap calculator, but I am fairly new at soap making and
need a mentor. I am having a problem with the soap being a bit dry and
has crumbled at times? I am not sure what I am doing wrong as I like to
make the soap but this isn't how the end results should be? Any
thoughts?"

Susan,

Your "dry, crumbly" problem is most likely the result of having used excess lye in making soap, but could possibly result from using large amounts of hard oils such as cocoa butter.

Please provide your ingredients and amounts.
