New to Soapmaking

Hi

My name is Felice. I have been interested in making soap for many years. My life is changing and its time to pick up the pieces from my bath business I started 7 years ago and begin again.  I've wanted to create my own shampoo and now the time is right. I look forward to meeting everyone and sharing the joys and woes of soapmaking.

Hi everyone....my name is deb and have also make some "changes" in my life.
Moved to another state a few months ago after the death (cancer battle for 9 years) of my baby sister and have promised to finish a book we started together.
Have also had a passion for crafting of many venues..scrap-booking, stained glass etc and have just started making my own shampoo and loved it so much have decided to do soaps and candles as well. Thinking about starting a new business venture soon and am having so much fun with all of this. I do find the information about soap-making so overwhelming though. I feel as though I am jumping around too much....would like to start simple....any suggestions.

I'd suggest starting with the "Three Oils Soap Recipe" available at the blue button bar at the left on this site.

It's the result of investigating fifty 3-oils recipes we found on the net and averaging them out, then rounding the percentages off just a bit.

It makes a quite respectable handcrafted soap and is a good starting point to add other oils, etc to customize your own formulae.

You can buy a pre-mixed quantity from us (when we have it in stock), you can mix your own for each batch, or you can pre-prepare a quantity of three-oils mix and measure it out for each batch as you need it.

If you buy it or prepare it pre-mixed according to our formula you can use the "3-Oils Mix" oil selection in our SBM Soap Calculators and Recipe Resizers to figure just what you need for your molds.

Getting a handle on this first would make getting into quantity soapmaking a bit easier for you.

Good luck to you!

Hi everyone,

I'm Delores and I've been making cold processed soap since 1997. I started making hot processed and liquid soap about 4 years ago. My next venture is cream soapmaking. To everyone that's new to soapmaking I would suggest reading as many soap books as possible and checking out some online soapmaking forums. When I first started there were very few people to get advice from but now there are so many places to look. If you can take a class, have someone show you how it's done or watch a video, that would be worth your time.

To Felice, I can say that we have all probably had to start over at some point in our lives. I know I have restarted my business a couple of times and am now in a revamping stage. The point is to get up dust yourself off and get back out there. If this is your passion, don't give up because it will happen for you. I was in the Bath & Body Works store today and it was extremely crowded. A good indication that the bath & beauty products industry is surviving. So just hang in there.

To Steve, thanks for hanging in there. I love your site and people I know have said some nice things about you.

I'm just wanting to make lotion bars. I saw some of your materials on ebay and I came to find your website.

Hiya y'all!

Figured I'd introduce myself here, and then see what the site has to offer!  I actually haven't made soaps yet, but do make lotions, oils, and other herbal goodies.  Soaps are on our list of "to-do's".  We, my wife Santanita and I, have been doing this for ourselves for years but started marketing our products less than a year ago.  You'll probably be seeing much more of her than me on here, but wanted to stop by and say, HI!!!

I am new too. I started  out making lip balm and the next thing I know i am making balm, soap, lotion and candles :0)  (I have some ADHD when it comes to crafts of all kinds!!!) I hope to make new friends too!!! I find the economy has put a dent in most of my friends hobbies. I find myself very lucky that, my husband, and I have not been affected by this.

I'm new to soapmaking as well, but have been making my own laundry soap and bath products for years.  I was excited to learn the art of soapmaking so I can make EVERYTHING and not have to outsource! :)

Hi Felice!

Thanks for posting!

"My life is changing" rings a loud bell for me. Through three marriages, single parenthood of two small, then large kids and major career and health changes, the only thing constant has been change!

Good luck with reestablishing your business. Anyone have any helpful tips for Felice?
